About this task
Dog interrupts or redirects a meltdown or self-stimulatory behavior through physical contact or redirection.
How it helps: Provides sensory input that can interrupt a meltdown cycle and help the individual regulate.
Required foundation skills
DPT. Grounding. Excellent temperament under stress.
Training steps
- Dog must have stable temperament and not react to loud noises or sudden movements
- Teach dog to approach and apply gentle pressure during simulated distress
- Teach dog to persist in contact without becoming distressed
- Teach dog a specific behavior that works for the individual (lap, nudge, lick)
- Practice with handler making sounds and movements associated with meltdowns
- Proof carefully — never force dog to continue if they become uncomfortable
Proofing criteria
Once your dog reliably performs this task at home, proof it in these environments and situations:
- Approaches and applies contact during simulated distress
- Remains calm during loud vocalizations
- Remains calm during flapping or sudden movement
- Persists in contact without breaking away
- Does not become distressed or reactive during practice sessions
