About this task

Dog interrupts or redirects a meltdown or self-stimulatory behavior through physical contact or redirection.

How it helps: Provides sensory input that can interrupt a meltdown cycle and help the individual regulate.

Required foundation skills

DPT. Grounding. Excellent temperament under stress.

Training steps

  1. Dog must have stable temperament and not react to loud noises or sudden movements
  2. Teach dog to approach and apply gentle pressure during simulated distress
  3. Teach dog to persist in contact without becoming distressed
  4. Teach dog a specific behavior that works for the individual (lap, nudge, lick)
  5. Practice with handler making sounds and movements associated with meltdowns
  6. Proof carefully — never force dog to continue if they become uncomfortable

Proofing criteria

Once your dog reliably performs this task at home, proof it in these environments and situations:

  1. Approaches and applies contact during simulated distress
  2. Remains calm during loud vocalizations
  3. Remains calm during flapping or sudden movement
  4. Persists in contact without breaking away
  5. Does not become distressed or reactive during practice sessions
