About this task

Dog responds during or after a seizure to keep the handler safe and summon help.

How it helps: Protects the handler during a seizure and assists with recovery.

Required foundation skills

Solid foundation obedience. Get help behavior.

Training steps

  1. Teach dog to lie next to handler during a seizure simulation
  2. Teach dog not to leave handler during event
  3. Teach dog to activate an alert device if trained
  4. Teach dog to get help — go to another person or another room
  5. Teach dog to bring a phone or alert device to handler during recovery
  6. Practice with handler on the floor in various positions
  7. Proof in all environments

Proofing criteria

Once your dog reliably performs this task at home, proof it in these environments and situations:

  1. Stays with handler during simulated seizure
  2. Does not interfere with handler during event
  3. Activates alert device on cue
  4. Goes to find help when cued
  5. Brings phone or device to recovering handler
  6. Remains calm throughout event and recovery
