Training steps
- Teach dog to lie next to handler during a seizure simulation
- Teach dog not to leave handler during event
- Teach dog to activate an alert device if trained
- Teach dog to get help — go to another person or another room
- Teach dog to bring a phone or alert device to handler during recovery
- Practice with handler on the floor in various positions
- Proof in all environments
Proofing criteria
Once your dog reliably performs this task at home, proof it in these environments and situations:
- Stays with handler during simulated seizure
- Does not interfere with handler during event
- Activates alert device on cue
- Goes to find help when cued
- Brings phone or device to recovering handler
- Remains calm throughout event and recovery
