- AKC recognizes dogs that have completed the required number of visits through an AKC-recognized therapy dog organization.
- AKC Novice Therapy Dog (THDN): 10 visits
- AKC Therapy Dog (THD): 50 visits
- AKC Advanced Therapy Dog (THDA): 100 visits
- AKC Distinguished Therapy Dog (THDD): 200 visits
- AKC Therapy Dog Excellent (THDX): 400 visits
- Dog must be certified by an AKC-recognized therapy dog organization
